Tire air cap. This cap is actually called a tire valve stem cap. These caps arent there to prevent air from leaking. Theyre there to prevent dirt and moisture buildup inside of the valve stem.
The valve stem is that little nip that you press down to let air out your tires. A tires valve cap can come loose and fall off your tire for any number of reasons. If its not tightened enough the bumps of the road can cause it to loosen over time.
If its tightened too much the thread on the valve stem may become stripped causing the cap to loosen. It can also be loosened or knocked off if you brush against a curb while parking. Tires with green caps are filled with nitrogen.
Tires with green caps are filled with nitrogen instead of compressed air. Nitrogen is a naturally occurring colorless odorless tasteless gas that makes up 78 of the earths atmosphere. The vast majority of tires are filled with compressed air.
If you take your vehicle in for a routine service that includes checking the tire air pressure the valve stem caps should be properly tightened and should be replaced if missing. If you find a mechanic who does this you have found a keeper. Any mechanic that flags this issue as part of a used vehicle inspection is one who understands how important it is to be thorough even when it comes to seemingly insignificant.
The cap is simple to replace and helps your tires maintain the air pressure. Correct tire pressure provides a better driving experience regardless of the weather conditions. Seal Valve Stems Replacing the tire valve stem caps helps seal the valve stem.
When the core of the valve stem fails air leaks out. The tire maintains pressure better when the rubber seal of the tire valve stem cap is properly screwed on. Unscrew and remove the existing valve stem caps only the caps not the stems on your tires.
Make sure the O-ring seal is inside safety cap. Installation without the seal can lead to tire deflation. Install a Safety Cap onto each of your valve stems by twisting in a clockwise fashion.
